AIRi@UTCN Invited Lecture: Gatekeeping and Evolving the Beauty of Cultural Heritage with Generative AI

Speaker: Dr. James She, Associate Professor, Thrust of Computational Media and Arts, HKUST (Guangzhou)

About the Speaker

Dr. James She is a university professor and media artist. He serves as tenured Associate Professor of Computational Media and Art at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Guangzhou, China, holding a joint appointment with the Division of Arts and Machine Creativity at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, China.

Leveraging cutting-edge AI, multimedia computing, immersive systems, and IoT technologies, his practice transforms code and complex datasets into evocative artistic, cultural, and sensory experiences spanning art, heritage preservation, education, media, and sports.

He currently serves as Associate Editor for the influential art-tech journal Leonardo (MIT Press, 2026-present) and previously held Associate Editor roles for leading multimedia journals IEEE TMM and ACM TOMM. His research appears at flagship conferences — ACM Multimedia, SIGGRAPH/Asia, ISEA — and in high-impact journals covering multimedia, art-tech, cultural computing, and IoT: Leonardo, ACM TOMM, ACM JOCCH, IEEE TMM, IEEE TMC, and IEEE IoT.

As a visiting artist (2020) at Qatar Museums' Fire Station, he developed the region's first AI-powered art exhibition and media production exploring cultural heritage and sport, with his artworks exhibited internationally across the UAE, South Korea, Australia, Thailand, China, Austria, and numerous other countries.

A regularly invited speaker-artist at major global art-technology gatherings including the Silesian Science Festival (2025), Islamic Arts Biennale (2023), and Hong Kong AI Art Festival (2025), he leads student groups from HKUST(GZ) and HKUST to present creative works at the Ars Electronica Campus Exhibit (2024, 2025, 2026) and other international platforms, helping emerging student artists build global exposure.
