AI and Autonomous Systems Workshop

6 November 2026 | 15:00–17:40 | UTCN Hub

The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca will host the AI and Autonomous Systems Workshop on 6 November 2026, bringing together researchers from leading European institutions and UTCN for an afternoon of talks on machine learning, autonomous robotics, motion planning and AI for energy systems.

The workshop is organised as an activity of the Commission on Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems of the Romanian Academy and features Răzvan Pașcanu (Google DeepMind UK and MILA, Canada), Cristian Mahulea (University of Zaragoza, Spain), Ionela Prodan (Grenoble INP, France) and Tudor Cioară (Technical University of Cluj-Napoca).

The programme will address four complementary research directions: the role of scale in modern machine learning, semantic exploration and mission planning for autonomous robots, constrained motion planning and control, and AI foundation models and agents for autonomous energy systems.

Programme

15:00–15:40 | Răzvan Pașcanu, Google DeepMind UK and MILA, Canada

The Role of “Scale” in Modern Machine Learning Systems

Online

The talk will examine the reliance of modern machine learning on increasingly large models and explore whether alternative directions are possible, with particular attention to gradient interference, representation learning and continual learning.

15:40–16:20 | Cristian Mahulea, University of Zaragoza, Spain

From Perception to Mission: Semantic Exploration and Planning for Autonomous Robots

The presentation will introduce a planning framework combining vision-language models and temporal logic, enabling autonomous robots to integrate exploration and mission execution in partially known environments.

16:20–17:00 | Ionela Prodan, Grenoble INP, France

Motion Planning and Control through Flatness Transformations and Constrained Optimisation

The talk will present an approach to robotic motion planning combining optimisation-based control, differential flatness, neural-network representations of constraints and mixed-integer programming.

17:00–17:40 | Tudor Cioară, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania

AI Foundation Models and Agents for Autonomous Energy Systems

The presentation will explore the development of AI foundation models for smart energy grids and the transition from analytical models towards AI agents capable of perception, reasoning, planning and interaction with complex physical infrastructure. Participation

Speakers & Participants

Razvan Pascanu

**Member, AIRi@UTCN Advisory Committee** **Senior Research Scientist, Google DeepMind | Affiliate Member, Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute | General Chair, NeurIPS 2026** Răzvan Pașcanu is a researcher in artificial intelligence and machine learning, specialising in deep learning, neural network optimisation, recurrent neural networks and continual learning. He is a Senior Research Scientist at [Google DeepMind](https://deepmind.google/) and an Affiliate Member of [Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute](https://deepmind.google/). As a member of the AIRi@UTCN Advisory Committee, he contributes his scientific expertise and international perspective to the institute's strategic development, research priorities and international collaborations. Originally from Romania, Pașcanu pursued his university studies in Germany, earning his master's degree from[ Jacobs University Bremen](https://constructor.university/history) in 2009. He completed his PhD at Université de Montréal in 2014 under the supervision of [Professor Yoshua Bengio](https://mila.quebec/en/directory/yoshua-bengio), focusing on optimisation, recurrent neural networks and deep learning. His research spans several areas of machine learning, including efficient optimisation and training of deep neural networks, memory and recurrent architectures, reinforcement learning, meta-learning, continual learning and graph neural networks. He also contributed to the development of [Theano](http://deeplearning.net/software/theano/), an influential open-source framework for deep learning research. Alongside his scientific work, Pașcanu has taken on leadership roles in major international AI conferences. He serves as General Chair of NeurIPS 2026, one of the world's leading conferences in machine learning, following his appointment as Program Chair for NeurIPS 2025. His academic service also includes organisational roles in the Conference on Lifelong Learning Agents (CoLLAs), the Learning on Graphs (LoG) Conference and research workshops dedicated to continual learning. Beyond his research, Pașcanu is actively involved in strengthening AI education and research communities, particularly in Eastern Europe. He is one of the organisers of the Eastern European Machine Learning Summer School ([EEML](http://www.eeml.eu/)), an initiative that provides advanced machine learning education and connects emerging researchers with leading international experts. He is also involved in AI Romania and has helped organise [Romanian AI Days](https://days.airomania.eu/) since 2020, as well as [educational activities introducing artificial intelligence to high school students](https://sites.google.com/view/airomania/projects/ai-for-highschool). Through his involvement in AIRi@UTCN, Răzvan Pașcanu brings expertise in advanced machine learning research, international scientific collaboration and the development of AI research and education communities.
