The origins of the company date back to 1984, when it was founded as a division of Racal Electronics Plc, then known as Racal Telecomms Limited. By October 1988, approximately 20% of the company's capital was offered to the public. The entity fully separated from Racal Electronics Plc in September 1991, officially becoming the independent Vodafone Group Plc.
Following a merger with AirTouch Communications, Inc. in June 1999, the company briefly operated as Vodafone AirTouch Plc. However, following shareholder approval in July 2000, it returned to its established name, Vodafone Group Plc, as it is known today.
